Sylvie Hauser is the Outreach Director of Affordable Dental Care. She is with ADC through the AmeriCorps VISTA program, so she will be with us for one year (at least!). She grew up in Door County and is grateful to be so close to home for the year. In June, she graduated from Carleton College with her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science / International Relations and minors in Spanish and Political Economy.
Sylvie is considering going to graduate school for something related to public policy or nonprofit work, so this year is a great way for her to gain experience in the nonprofit world. Her favorite thing about working at ADC is seeing how much the staff believes in the mission. Outside of work, Sylvie loves to read, cook, and spend time outside.
Alan Thompson is the office manager at Affordable Dental Care. He was born in Neenah, WI, and grew up in Fitchburg, WI. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Iowa State University with a minor in Economics. He has worked at Affordable Dental Care since the Madison office opened in April 2018, but he worked in the same building at the previous clinic for two years before Affordable Dental Care moved in.
Alan didn’t always know he wanted to work in dentistry, but his friend’s dad needed an office manager for his dental clinic and Alan was the right fit. He likes working at Affordable Dental Care because of the other staff members he gets to work with each day. When he’s not at work, Alan loves hiking and photography, so he takes lots of photos of the nature he sees on his hikes. You can see his photography on the calendar when you walk into our office!
Claudia Alvites is a dental assistant at Affordable Dental Care. She grew up in Chiclayo, Peru and studied dentistry at San Martín de Porres University. She has worked at Affordable Dental Care since January of 2019.
Claudia decided to work in dentistry because she wants people to always be smiling! In addition to making smiles happen daily, her favorite thing about working at ADC is the work environment. When she’s not at work, she likes to listen to music. She listens to every genre, except for rap and heavy metal.
Zulay Montiel is a dental assistant at Affordable Dental Care. She grew up in Machiques, Venezuela and studied dentistry at the University of Zulia. She has worked at Affordable Dental Care since the Madison office opened in April 2018.
There was a dental office in Zulay’s middle school in Venezuela, which she visited often because the dentist was really handsome. Because she was there so much, the dentist thought she liked the office, so he gave her a tour and showed her the dental equipment. One day, he took her hands and told her that she had the hands of a dentist. She wanted to work in dentistry from that day on. Her favorite part of working at Affordable Dental Care is the humanity she witnesses in this office. When she’s not at work, Zulay likes to play tennis, which has been a hobby of hers since she lived in Venezuela. She is expecting her first daughter in September 2019!
Victoria Pogue is a dental hygienist at Affordable Dental Care. She grew up in California, but moved to Wisconsin ten years ago with only a suitcase! She graduated from college in California but also attended Madison College after moving to Wisconsin. Her passion for dentistry was discovered through a previous job as a veterinary technician, where she cleaned animals’ teeth! Ever since she left that position eight years ago, she has worked in dentistry.
Victoria joined the ADC team in June 2018 and loves many things about working here. She especially likes being able to establish relationships with the patients (in Spanish and English!) and, of course, she loves our staff family. When she’s not at work, she likes to kayak and snowboard as well as spend time with her husband, newborn son, and dog.
Krysta Wetzel is the Executive Director of Affordable Dental Care. She has worked in the dental field since age 15, in a number of roles including private dental practice management, dental hygiene, dental assisting, dental laboratory, teaching, and as a volunteer and coordinator for community clinics. Krysta is bilingual in Spanish and English; in fact, almost two years of her dental career were spent in the dental field in Central America.
Krysta loves working at ADC because she sees it as an opportunity to put her faith in action with her career. “I’m here because I love the ADC model of caring for those in the gap. It’s easy to relate to the challenges. I cannot promise my staff competitive pay but I can promise the best work environment! It’s important, not just for staff, but patients can feel the difference too when you are enjoying your work.” Krysta walks the walk, too -- she became a runner to participate in the ADC Marathon fundraiser in 2018! Besides making ADC run, Krysta loves to spend time with her family, and cheering on her four children in soccer, basketball and cross country.
Dr. Chuck Rubash is a dentist at Affordable Dental Care. He grew up in Aurora, MN, and graduated from dental school at Marquette University in 1981. He practiced dentistry in New Lisbon, WI, for 30 years before selling his practice and moving to Madison. He worked at the Whitewater clinic until it merged with the Madison clinic and then started at the Madison location, which significantly shortened his commute.
Dr. Chuck’s mom gave him some direction as far as what you should do with your life, which helped him to decide he wanted to become a dentist. His favorite thing about working at Affordable Dental Care is that everyone is really friendly, gets along, and does a nice job. Outside of work, he’s a “comic geek” and sometimes travels to Comic Con events.
Jack Fisher, DMD, is a dentist at Affordable Dental Care. He started in the dental field at the age of 14 working in a dental laboratory in Springfield, IL. He had to bike about 21 miles each day on a one speed bicycle and made one dollar an hour. He served in the armed forces from 1980 to 1986 as a helicopter mechanic. He graduated from dental school at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in 1999.
Dr. Fisher has wanted to be a dentist since that first job in the dental laboratory. Since then, pursuing a career in dentistry seemed natural. He has worked at Affordable Dental Care since the Madison office opened in April 2018. He loves working with the other staff at ADC and he believes in its mission (“our patients have a skin in the game”). When he’s not at work, he enjoys flying the gyro-plane that he built himself. He used to do a lot of sailing, but the thrill of flying his plane has replaced that hobby.
